Hyundai Motor India Limited is a South Korean based car exporter and the second largest car manufacturer in India. Honda Motor Company is a much respected and branded Japanese multinational corporation manufacturing automobiles and motorcycles. Both have a number of enticing cars running well in the Indian market. Here is a comparison of their two sedans – the Verna and the new City.

The Verna was originally introduced by Hyundai in 2006. It has seen many up gradations since then and the current model seen was out in 2011. It might get a facelift early next year. The City is much elder as it came to India long back in the year 1998. Successive enhancements on the City have resulted in a generation shift and the current one is the fourth. The latest model was out this year.

Hyundai Verna is a modern and racy looking car, on the other hand the City though stylish, looks comparatively conventional. But City gets the credit for being larger and more spacious than the Hyundai car. Verna also has a roomy cabin but the boot space in City is significantly larger.

The equipment list is quite exhaustive in the new Honda car.The top of the line VX trim of the City gets a touch-screen climate control system, a multifunctional steering with audio and cruise control functions, Bluetooth telephony, a trip computer and a sunroof as well. In the frontthere are handy cup and bottle holders and functional storage areas, while the rear gets an AC vent and two cup holders.Hyundai Verna gets none of these comfort features for the rear passengers. It only does get above the new City over a cooled glovebox, automatic lights and wipers, an adjustable central armrest at the front and more posh looking plastic. Also the Verna gets six airbags against City’s two in its top of the line trim.

Hyundai is offering Verna with eight engine variants which are 1.4L Petrol/1.4L Diesel, 1.6L Petrol/1.6L Diesel, two SX 1.6L petrol/diesel version and two high-end variants with optional features. The 1.6L petrol/diesel engine models are available in automatic transmission and manual transmission, whereas 1.4L petrol/diesel models have only the manual transmission feature.

Honda has introduced the new City in both petrol and diesel engine options. They are a 1.5L SOHC i-VTEC petrol mill and a 1.5L DOHC i-DTEC diesel engine. The petrol engines are paired to either a 5 speed manual or CVT, whereas the diesel engine comes mated to a 6 speed manual transmission. In terms of performance, mileage and driving dynamics theCity definitely outsmarts the Verna.

Both are city cars and good value for money propositions.
